Great support today for our Godwit event at Sandy Bay Road.
Each
year during September the bar-tailed godwit return to New Zealand from their
breeding grounds in Northern Alaska a near 12,000 km nonstop flight. We are
fortunate to have over 200 birds that choose Shoal and Ngataringa estuaries to stay
during our summer months enjoying the estuary food of worms and crustaceans, before
they are ready to leave the following March. Then they complete the cycle by
returning to Alaska via a stopover in China to feed up to prepare again for
breeding in Alaska. A round trip of nearly 30,000 kms.
