Each year we listen out for the Shining cuckoo a migratory terrestrial bird to New Zealand. I heard my first this year on the 17th October and now I'm regularly hearing their distinctive calls from the nearby reserve.
They are a real challenge to photograph but I did successfully get close enough to one some time back during a travel in the Coromandel peninsular.
